Berlinale Talks: Charlotte Rampling's candidness is refreshing

By LINDSAY R. BELLINGER

Ms. Charlotte Rampling was beyond charming during her talk with Peter Cowie and while answering at least a dozen questions from a mixed bag of audience members. The audience was treated to a number of memorable scenes from her eclectic and impressive array of films. The first scene was the moment from Stardust Memories when Woody Allen's director character approaches Rampling's character, admiring how interesting she is after having watched her all morning. It's a playful and light scene that unfolds between Rampling and Allen. The best moment was as soon as the lights came back on after the clip Ms. Rampling revealed a fun, playful smirk with a slight laugh that really made me wonder how lovely it must have been, her experience working that film.

(Still from Stardust Memories. Charlotte Rampling, Woody Allen, © 1980 Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studios Inc. All Rights Reserved.)

The other scenes from her films did not earn such a noticeable reaction, which lead me to believe that there really must have been something special about working on that film with Woody Allen and his film team. Afterwards, we continued to see scenes from The Nightporter and Georgie Girl which was her first role on film. The discussion was quite frank and she laughed easily, as did the audience. It was really a very special evening listening to Ms. Rampling discuss her long and illustrious career in film and television.

The crowd did not disperse easily, as so many fans waiting patiently for autographs and photos of the extraordinary Golden Bear Homage recipient Charlotte Rampling.

The Golden Glove by Fatih Akin: Berlinale Review

Meager, for the most part, is the attempt by Fatih Akin to recreate the unambitious life of Fritz Honka, a schizophrenic killer who, in the seventies of Hamburg, brutally murders and dismembers four prostitutes in his hideous attic.

Unquestionably crowned the most abominable film of 2019, Akin does not hesitate to employ explicit sound and image from the very

top of the film, capable of provoking feelings of horror and outrage even to the most hardcore splatter fans. Pornographic photos stuck on the wall in an unorderly fashion, dilapidated cigarette butts, a filthier toilet than the one that McGregor dived into Trainspotting, as well as a plethora of Kornbranntwein bottles, acquaint us with the crime scene.

Confronted with the large proportions of his most recent victim, after miserably failing to insert the body successfully in a plastic bag, Honka begins the process of dismemberment - with a chainsaw - in order to dispose of it effectively.

Luckily for us, Akin sets limitations to the scene, providing us with an acoustic rather than visual experience of the event. Although this scene may only last a few minutes, it feels centenary to the viewer. Besides being deranged, Honka is also a fanatic racist, attributing the foul odour of the building to his Greek neighbours

Honka’s face is barely tolerable, as the repellent malformations urge us to maneuver our heads away from the screen, especially during the frequent close-ups. In the "Golden Glove", the tasteless bar from which Honka "collects" his slimy looking female victims, uninterrupted debauchery prevails. Beguiling them with more alcohol, Honka manages to seduce some of the prostitutes to his revolting attic.

None of them escape Honka’s opprobrium. The pattern is copious; humiliation, vigorous rape and severe sadistic activity, prior to murder by beating. And whilst we have repeatedly come across the degradation of the female on the big screen,  Honka’s brutality seriously digresses from anything we have seen before.

More shocking perhaps is the fact that this is a true story, based on the murders of Fritz Honka who murdered at least four women in the St. Pauli suburb of Hamburg, before being discovered by the authorities after his attic caught fire. Akin is exposes us to some biographical excerpts; the real paraphernalia of the murder, photos of his home in St Pauli, as well as his deformed face.

Sadly, the film disregards Honka’s psychological state, hence failing to build a meaningful, engrossing storyline. A crude, unrefined depiction of one more barbarian, which has left us tight-lipped (and not in the good way), in light of Akin’s previous creations (see Soul Kitchen). Jonas Dassler, an outstanding impersonator, manages to keep us peeled. Otherwise, opt for The House that Jack Built, the aftertaste is definitely sweeter.

Leakage | Nasht by Suzan Iravanian (Forum): Berlinale Review

Foziye’s husband, an employee in the regional oil company, has vanished into thin air. Although her questions remain unanswered about his whereabouts, her faith prevails that he is still alive. During her visit at the local pension centre, she still replies “married” when her marital status is requested. Her life has metamorphosed into an arduous journey, considering her financial hardship and lack of work. Her mother incriminates her inertia, whilst her daughter incessantly howls about the intricacies of life in Iran and her upcoming exodus to Germany, where she suspects her dad has relocated.

Nevertheless, the other family members are unaware that something is tormenting Foziye at a more profound level. Her stomach aches are gradually aggravating. The root cause of the pain, supernatural and obscure; crude oil is relentlessly pouring out of her body, soiling her vestments and the bed linen. Susan Iravanian impeccably reveals the enigma to the spectator through a down shot, accompanied by a classical music score, generating thus the antithetical emotions of disorientation and harmony.

Inasmuch as Foziye tries to bury her secret, consuming her days washing the bedlinen, it is not long before her mother discovers the stains. When the doctor announces that the discharge is not blood and that Foziye is perfectly healthy, the family acknowledges the legitimacy of her outcries. The plot thickens as we enter part two of the story; the displacement of the family in view of Foziye’s condition.

As they relocate to unknown territory, the paranoia intensifies; not only hers, but also Saeed’s, the poverty-stricken family servant. Her bodily malfunction is another man’s epiphany, who identifies a feasible profitability. Disbelief around the community, late-night crashes with forest animals, as well as the monotony of their isolated life, exacerbate the lunacy. Their lives whirl around the malady and the vision of an exodus is gradually drifting away.

Although the plot may cause disorientation at times, the overall result is admirable and demonstrates Iravanian’s stimulating fantasy and talent. Watch this when you’re feeling mystical.

Visions du Réel (5-13 April) is celebrating its 50th year under the banner of freedom and openness, which have characterized the Festival since its beginnings. It is under this banner, focused both on memory and on the future, that the Festival unveils its programme. For its 50th edition, the International Film Festival Nyon has selected 169 films, from 58 countries, including 102 that will be presented as world or international premieres. A number that shows the pioneering role of the Festival when it is a question of discovering new works of filmmaking.

Visions du Réel has selected 15 powerful works for its International Feature Film Competition, almost all of which are presented as world premieres. For Emilie Bujès, this selection inspires the feeling that “documentary filmmaking, in a definition as large and open as possible, is an inspired, determined and major cinematographic language”.

Without forgetting

- The Sesterce d’or Prix Raiffeisen Maître du Réel to Werner Herzog, who will honor the Festival with his presence for three whole days. The homage dedicated to Werner Herzog includes no fewer than 14 films, several of which will be presented by the director himself.

- The two Ateliers devoted to Tariq Teguia and the duo of Massimo D’Anolfi and Martina Parenti, between poetry and politics.

The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival is pleased to announce the complete lineup for the 22nd annual festival, April 4–7, 2019. Full Frame will screen documentary features and shorts from around the world in a premier showcase of film screenings, discussions, and panels to be held in historic downtown Durham, N.C. This year’s festival will include 46 features and 21 short films from 28 countries, selected from nearly 1,700 submissions.

Full Frame will screen 46 titles in competition in the NEW DOCS category — 25 features and 21 shorts. These films are eligible for a variety of juried awards offering a combined value of $55,000 in cash prizes. Award winners will be announced at the annual Awards Barbecue on Sunday, April 7.

Films screening out of competition in the Invited Program include 21 features.

“I am thrilled to share our 2019 Full Frame lineup,” said Full Frame Artistic Director Sadie Tillery. “These selections emerged from hours of review and intense discussions among our programming team. They are films that connect viewers with the experiences of people around the globe. Even those titles that focus on the past, illuminate the world we are living in now. The films also highlight the many different approaches that filmmakers take in this essential and often ethically challenging work. I am proud of the lineup as a collection, but I am most excited about the ways the films in this year’s festival exist in conversation with one another and the ways they will exist in conversation with the audience members this spring.”

Acclaimed filmmaker, photographer, and writer RaMell Ross will curate the 2019 Thematic Program, Some Other Lives of Time, which explores poetic modes of storytelling by highlighting documentary films that offer idiosyncratic experiences—films that create space for viewers to wander their own imaginations to make connections and meaning. Ross’s first film, Hale County This Morning, This Evening, was nominated for a Best Documentary Feature Academy Award® and won The Reva and David Logan Grand Jury Award at Full Frame 2018. The festival will honor distinguished filmmakers Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert with its 2019 Tribute. As part of the Tribute, Full Frame will screen a curated selection of their significant body of work, including Opening Night Film American Factory, winner of the U.S. Documentary Directing Award at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. Ross, Bognar, and Reichert will attend the festival.

Full Frame embraces a wide breadth of stories and styles, from both emerging and established artists. In a carefully curated lineup, prominent contemporary work screens alongside films that may be harder to see in theaters. Set within a few city blocks, the intimate festival landscape fosters community and conversation among filmmakers, film professionals, and audience members.

Full Frame is a qualifying event for the Producers Guild of America Award for Outstanding Producer of a Documentary Motion Picture and an Academy Award®–qualifying festival for Documentary Film Short Subject. The festival boasts a solid record of Academy Award® nominees and winners in both the short and feature categories.

The full schedule of films and events will be available online Thursday, March 14. Festival passes and ticket packages are available through Friday, March 15.

Christina Lindberg - Guest of Honour of Grossmann Fantastic Film and Wine Festival 2019

We are thrilled to announce that the legendary Swedish actress Christina Lindberg will be the guest of honour of this year's Grossmann, where she will receive the Honorary Vicious Cat for outstanding contribution to genre cinema. Grossmann Fantastic Film and Wine Festival will take place from the 16th to the 20th of July in Ljutomer, Slovenia.

Christina Lindberg is one of the most remarkable icons of 70s exploitation cinema. Her role of one-eyed avenger in cult classic Thriller: A Cruel Picture inspired Quentin Tarantino for his Kill Bill movies. Even before that, her roles in sexploitation movies made her Sweden’s sex symbol No.1.

Over the course of the 70s, she appeared in 23 films, from Scandinavian erotica (Maid in Sweden, Exponerad), German sex comedies (Schulmädchen-Report 4, Was Schulmädchen verschweigen) and collaboration with American sexploitation auteur Joe Sarno (Every Afternoon, Young Playthings) to Norifumi Suzuki’s cult pinku eiga extravaganza Sex and Fury. Standing out from the rest is Thriller: A Cruel Picture, a completely unique fusion of arthouse aesthetics, sexploitation and shocking violence, where she portrays one of the most iconic genre heroines with unmatched intensity.

Of course, this cult masterpiece will be screened in a special retrospective, along with documentary Christina Lindberg: The Original Eyepatch Wearing Butt Kicking Movie Babe. And there's more, for Christina Lindberg will also present her new horror film Black Circle, directed by Adrián García Bogliano, winner of our Vicious Cat 2016 award for Scherzo Diabolico.
