Sundance Institute completes the slate of bold independent work set for the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, with eight feature films, a VR experience, the NEXT Innovator’s Award juror and hosted retrospectives joining the lineup today. Screenings will take place in Park City, Salt Lake City and at Sundance Mountain Resort January 18-28.

RuPaul will convene a retrospective of VH1’s Emmy-winning “RuPaul’s Drag Race” on the heels of its 10th season, and host a panel with executive producers and Sundance Film Festival veterans Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey, along with Tom Campbell and Pamela Post, senior vice president of Original Programming for MTV, VH1 and Logo. RuPaul will also serve as the Festival’s inaugural and sole NEXT Innovator Award juror, and will present the NEXT Innovator Award to his favorite film in that category, which showcases pure, bold works distinguished by innovative, forward-thinking approaches to storytelling.

Other additions to the program include features Akicita: The Battle of Standing Rock, Hereditary, Lords of Chaos, The Long Dumb Road, Private Life, You Were Never Really Here and Sweet Country and New Frontier work Isle of Dogs Behind the Scenes (in Virtual Reality). Hearts Beat Loud, a feature announced earlier in the Premieres section, is now confirmed as a Closing Night Film.

These latest additions are joined by archive film Smoke Signals, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 1998, and a selection of early work by filmmaker Todd Haynes, whose feature film directorial debut Poison won the Grand Jury Prize at the 1991 Sundance Film Festival. The archive films are selections from the Sundance Institute Collection at UCLA, a partnership between UCLA Film & Television Archive and Sundance Institute. Established in 1997, the Collection is devoted to the preservation of independent documentaries, narratives, and short films supported by Sundance Institute.  The Collection has grown to over 4,000 holdings representing nearly 2,300 titles and preservation efforts have brought renewed attention to films such as Hoop Dreams, Desert Hearts, Reservoir Dogs, River of Grass, Walking and Talking, Paris is Burning, El Mariachi and Paris, Texas. Titles are generously donated by individual filmmakers, distributors and studios.

For the 2018 Festival, 121 feature-length films were selected, representing 29 countries and 53 first-time filmmakers, including 30 in competition. These films were selected from 13,468 submissions including 3,901 feature-length films and  8,740 short films. Of the feature film submissions, 1,799 were from the U.S. and 2,102 were international. One hundred and eight feature films at the Festival will be world premieres. In 2017, the Festival drew 71,638 attendees, generated $151.5 million in economic activity for the state of Utah and supported 2,778 local jobs.

The latest additions to the 2018 Sundance Film Festival Program are:

USA October 2017 - 83 minutes

Academy Award Winner, Jeff Bridges presents this beautifully photographed tour de force of original thinking on who we are and the environmental challenges we face. Jeff, alongside prominent scientists and authors, weave evolution, emergence, entropy, dark ecology, and what some are calling the end of nature, into a story that helps us understand our place among the species of Earth’s household. The film upends our way of thinking and provides original insights into our subconscious motivations, the unintended consequences, what to do about our fossil slaves, and how our fundamental animal nature influences our future as Humankind.

Children's Film Festival Seattle 2018 Trailer

6abc63cf-31d6-4a7a-9c1f-13f5cde79e59.jpgNorthwest Film Forum is getting ready to roll out the red carpet for its 2018 edition of  Children's Film Festival Seattle— the largest and most respected festival of its kind west of the Mississippi.

The festival will stretch out over the course of two weeks, from its opening night on January 25 to its awards ceremony on February 10, 2018, with most screenings at Northwest Film Forum, in the bustling heart of Capitol Hill. Opening night, sponsored by The Boeing Company and presented in partnership with Seattle International Film Festival, will take place at the Egyptian Theatre, also on Capitol Hill.

The family-friendly extravaganza celebrates the best and brightest in international cinema that is age-appropriate for ages 2-14, and will include 168 films from 55 nations, spanning the globe from North to South America, Africa, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The festival includes animation and live-action shorts, features, and hands-on filmmaking workshops, all crafted with care to appeal to a wide range of age groups.

The theme of the 2018 festival is “Dream the Future.”

“We want children to come to the festival not only to be entertained by funny and fantastic films, but also to discover common ground, to build empathy and envision their places in the wider world,” said Festival director Elizabeth Shepherd. “Now, more than ever, we see the potential of Seattle youth to become compassionate and proactive global citizens, and we are certain that the films included in our programs will energize and motivate them to make the world a better place.”

For young viewers, the festival is also full of stories of exploration and adventure, many of them to be found in the festival’s overstuffed animation section made up of 92 films. Visual storytelling in this category covers subject matter ranging from intergalactic voyages, to whimsical hunts for buried gold, to desperate dashes for freedom during wartime.“We look for films that show young people overcoming great odds, making a difference, charting their own courses,” said Shepherd. “This films are meant to encourage our audience members to think of themselves, too, as agents of change.”

Though the films in the festival show the broader world, the festival itself aims to be a cozy silver-screen experience for families, with most films served up in Northwest Film Forum’s intimate two intimate cinemas, seating 120 and 46 people, respectively.

Shepherd says, “Everything we do at our festival is warm and intimate, and geared to creating an age-appropriate experience that will enchant and inspire kids and their families.”

OPENING WEEKEND & SPECIAL EVENTS

Festival opening night, sponsored by 437ea113-5801-4a35-8b21-47d976389b97.jpg
The Boeing Company, is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at the Egyptian Theatre, 805 E. Pine Street, with a gala presentation of Hayao Miyazaki’s classic 1986 film, “Castle in the Sky.”  The film is a breathtaking animated adventure about a young girl with a mysterious crystal pendant who searches for the site of a long-dead civilization promising enormous power to those who can unlock its secrets. The evening, presented in partnership with Seattle International Film Festival, will begin with a costume contest for audience members — a chance to strut the stage dressed as their favorite characters from Miyazaki’s films.

Another film classic will be revisited at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, at Northwest Film Forum, with the screening of "Invention for Destruction" (The Fabulous World of Jules Verne”), a rediscovered and newly restored 1958 gem by renowned Czech animator and designer, Karel Zeman. Fantastical machines, a deadly submarine, and science put to nefarious ends all figure into the film, which seems, at times, ripped from today’s headlines. It is also a visual experience like none other, with live action melding with animated imagery based on Victorian steel engravings. Spoiler alert: there is also a happy ending.

Hands-on workshops for kids will roll out on January 27 and 28, with workshops in 360 filmmaking and mobile filmmaking taught by Northwest Film Forum education manager and lead youth teacher, Jonah Kozlowski. A talk and software demonstration on January 27, led by British artist and educator Anne Terkelson, will introduce older teenagers to the digital animation program at Arts University Bournemouth, in the UK.  In addition to these workshops, free interactive, drop-in activities will transform Northwest Film Forum’s lobby, throughout the festival, into a fabulous world where children can actively dream the future in displays that are part submarine (with VR periscope!), part film set, and part special effects classroom. For complete information about educational activities, visit the “classes” section of
www.childrensfilmfestivalseattle.org.

The second Saturday morning of the festival will mark another longtime tradition: an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Assumption, at 1804 13th Avenue. After the breakfast, at 10:30 and 11 a.m., there will be showings of “Into the Magic,” an uplifting, all-ages program of animated shorts, at Northwest Film Forum.

FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS

Festival hige467b4c2-f6d4-4a46-997f-5528a5da9cde.jpghlights in 2018 will include several insightful documentaries for families. “Purple Dreams,” a US film, is the chronicle of a triumphant high school musical production that propels its cast and crew —students who struggle with homelessness, poverty and gang-related violence — into a new world of opportunity and accomplishment. Another powerful documentary, “Not Without Us” (Germany), goes global, showing what life is really like for 16 children in 14 countries, on five continents.

Narrative features include the West Coast premieres of The Legend of Timm Thaler (Germany), Hero Steps (Colombia), Cloudboy (Sweden/Netherlands/Belgium/Norway) and the Seattle premieres of Treasure (Mexico) and Wendy (Germany). 5 Rupees (India) will be a North American premiere.

Animated features, for younger audiences, will be Bamse and The Witch’s Daughter (Sweden), a US premiere, and Lila’s Book (Columbia-Uruguay), a West Coast premiere. Also notable will be a program of international youth-made films, “World Lens: Youth Dream the Future,” will mark the second annual partnership between CFFS and the PLURAL+ Youth Video Festival— a joint initiative between the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations and the International Organization for Migration. The New York-based festival showcases films made by young people around the world on the themes of migration, diversity and social inclusion.

As in previous years, kids will also be decision-makers and VIPS at the festival — this year’s Children’s Jury, made up of 25 Seattle-area youth ages 9 to 15, will be led once again by a group of several teenaged jury graduates. And every audience member will also have an opportunity to vote for the festival’s coveted audience awards given in several categories.

16th Third Eye Asian Film Festival: VII

TEAFF was organised by the Asian Film Foundation and P.L. Deshpande Maharashtra Kala Academy, and co-organised by Prabhat Chitra Mandal and Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Chitrapat Mahamandal. An annual event, it is supported by Department of Culture, Government of Maharashtra. Screenings were held at Ravindra Natya Mandir Mini Auditorium, Mumbai, which has been the venue for the last few years.

In my last instalment, I covered two Marathi films. Today, we will talk about one Marathi and one Hindi film. That will still leave four films not yet covered, and those will feature in the next piece.

Copy, 2017

Directors Hemant Dhabade and Dayasagar Wankhede have made a hard-hitting documentary-like feature about corruption in, and commercialisation of, the education system in rural Maharashtra. It has a crusading zeal that is palpable throughout the 112 minutes of running time. The story and screenplay have been written by Rahul Salve, along with the director duo. Wankhede has written the dialogue. Choosing a real background, the film was shot in Kasu village, in Pen, close to Mumbai.

Missing school-teachers who make lots of easy money by teaching at coaching/tuition classes while playing truant during school-hours, putting careers of an entire generation of students at stake, forms the subject of this purposeful drama. Politicos run educational institutions funded by government grants, and a large portion of such funds is misappropriated. The dysfunctional or barely functional school plays havoc with the lives of students, since there is no other school in the vicinity. But to keep the wheels in motion, students are allowed, even encouraged, to cheat at examinations, copying the answers to the questions from, each other and from text-books. Passing examinations is all that matters. Not surprisingly, the school boasts of 100% results.

One teacher runs tuition/coaching classes, where he offers large sums of money to his colleagues, to persuade them to keep away from their school job. His logic is that the school management keeps defaulting on salaries, up to a whole year, so the teachers are justified in finding alternate sources of income. Two idealistic teachers stand-up against this crass commercialisation of the education system, and use fasting and satyagraha (non-violent protests, popularised by Mahatma Gandhi), in which they are joined by two students.

Popular comedian Anshuman Vichare, who acted in Shwaas, plays the role of a bearded teacher, with high moral standards, for a change. It is also a welcome change for Jagannath Nivangune, who has been typecast as a police officer, being cast here as the other crusader, along with Vichare. Both do a creditable job. Milind Shinde plays the unscrupulous opportunist who runs the coaching class, looking the part and apparently enjoying himself. Kamlesh Sawant, Anshuman Vichare, Jagannath Nivangune, Vipul Salunkhe, Anil Nagarkar, Kailas Waghmare and Poonam Waghmare provide adequate support.

Not an ideal package, Copy is at least an honest attempt at addressing a burning issue, with depth in writing.

(The schedule and the brochure mention only Dayasagar Wankhede as director. Wankhede clarified that this was a printing error and that the film was co-directed by Hemant Dhabade).

One would have expected Madhur Bhandarkar to call his 2017 vehicle 'Politics'. It is about politics. In the tradition of Chandni Bar, Satta, Traffic Signal, Fashion, Page 3, Corporate, Jail and Calendar Girls, naming it Politics conforms to the pattern of deriving a title from the milieu. Bhandarkar’s films do have the settings the titles suggest, but are usually the stories of women and men who populate such realms. Chandni Bar was more the tale of its protagonist than the bar and the historical timeline of the religious riots in Mumbai. So, come 2017, Bhandarkar decides to name his film after his protagonist, who is an indirect victim of the political scenario in New Delhi circa 1974-77.

Those were the days of Indira Raaj (rule), Indira Gandhi being the iron-fisted Prime Minister of India. A series of events across the country prompted Gandhi to Impose Internal Emergency, suspending most constitutional and human rights, and a gunpoint regime was made operational. There were many benefits of a policy of zero-tolerance towards hoarding, absenteeism, train delays, profiteering and more, which were weighed against the rule of diktats promulgated by Gandhi’s younger son Sanjay, the most draconian of which involved razing dawn of slums in New Delhi and a nationwide forcible sterilisation of men of all ages, in an attempt to stem population growth. Bhandarkar, now 50, was a little boy during the emergency period, so his story is not a memoir, by any yardstick. Anil Pandey, who worked with him in Dil Toh Baccha Hai and Calendar Girls, is also a post-emergency citizen, as is the dialogue writer, Sanjay Chhel. So, the film is fiction meets research.

Yes, the negatives of the emergency constitute a significant part of the film, though with a name like Indu Sarkar, it was only logical to expect an indictment of Indu (Indira)’s Sarkar (government). Very early in the film, Bhandarkar makes it clear that his leading lady is an orphan by the name of Indu, who stammers and writes poetry, and Sarkar is her married surname. So, Indu Sarkar is not about Indira’s government. Indira Gandhi, as played by an actress, is seen for about five seconds, at the end, and has no words to speak. By contrast, there is ample footage devoted to Sanjay Gandhi, again played by an actor.

Barring occasional flashes of inspiration, and some good lines, the fictionalised re-enactment of the dark period is lack-lustre. Kirti Kulhari (Shaitaan, Jal, Pink) as Indu Sarkar struggles to make the stammering work for her, and only barely succeeds. Tota Roy Chowdhury (Shubho Mahurt, Chokher Bali, Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh) as Navin Sarkar comes with impeccable credentials, only to get wasted. Neil Nitin Mukesh (Johnny Gaddaar, New York, 7 Khoon Maaf, Jail) does look a lot like Sanjay Gandhi. His scenes have a uni-dimensional look about them. Rashmi Jha as Farzana (named to rhyme with Rukhsana; Rukhsana Sultana was reported to be very close to Snajay) plays along like a moll, the role having been written more literally than cinematically. Sheeba Chaddha as Mekhla and Manav Vij as Inspector Sodhi draw appreciation, while Mohan Kapoor as Sahani and Parvin Dabas as an Intelligence Bureau Officer are stock characters. Casting artistes of the calibre of Anupam Kher as Nanaji Pradhan and Zakir Hussain as Inspector Mishra is a colossal waste. Lastly, Supriya Vinod, as Indira Gandhi, comes just before the credits roll.

Of some curiosity value is the rendering of his father, Aziz Nazan's iconic qawwali, ‘Chadhta sooraj dheerey dherey dhalta hae,” by Mujtaba Aziz Nazan, retained in full and picturised with the screen representation of Sanjay Gandhi in audience.

Stray incidents and allegories do not add up to an impressive whole in Indu Sarkar.

Amateurs by Gabriela Pichler to Open Göteborg Film Festival

The world premiere of Gabriela Pichler's Amateurs will kick off Göteborg Film Festival.

The uncompromising debut Eat Sleep Die immediately established Gabriela Pichler as one of Sweden’s most-respected directors. Eat Sleep Die won the Audience Award at Venice Film Festival's Critic's Week and four Guldbagge Awards (the Swedish equivalent to the Oscars) including Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay.

Now Pichler is back with her second feature Amateurs – an intelligent, warm and wonderfully funny film about who gets to decide a community's outward image. The small municipality of Lafors hopes to solve its economic drought by attracting a German discount supermarket. In order to bolster Lafors' brand, local teenagers are asked to produce films about their hometown, but the films do not turn out as expected. The project gets called off, but two young girls decide to continue working on their documentary anyway. Based on a script that Pichler wrote together with author Jonas Hassen Khemiri, Pichler depicts everyone, from the discontented citizens to angst-ridden politicans with great precision, an engaging sense of humor and 100% accuracy.

Amatuers is also included in Nordic Competition.

Australia’s most evocative cultural film event, the Alliance Française French Film Festival, returns to Adelaide’s Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas from 22 March to 15 April 2018

Celebrating its 29th season and running across seven cities and two satellite locations from late February to early April 2018, the Festival, which screens at Palace Cinemas throughout Australia, is proudly presented by the Alliance Française in association with the Embassy of France in Australia, Unifrance Films and the gracious support of esteemed Presenting Sponsor, Renault Australia.

Once again, this beloved, yet very avant-garde ‘grande dame’ will delight with a superb line-up of contemporary French cinema including, for the first time, a LGBT strand spread across categories such as “We are Family” and “Crazy in Love”, in celebration of the 40th Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras and Australia’s recent ‘Yes’ vote for same-sex marriage.

For his second year at the helm Artistic Director, Philippe Platel, has selected more than 50 features and documentaries – many of which will be Australian premières.

Perhaps as a counterpoint to the increasing challenges faced by modern society, the 2018 program also reflects the overall sense of positivity infusing many recent French titles, incorporating messages of courage, generosity, camaraderie and equality.

History will also play a key role, with three titles in particular - See You Up There (Au revoir là-haut)Golden Years (Nos années folles) and The Guardians (Les gardiennes) - exploring very diverse stories inspired by World War 1.

The work of emerging filmmakers like Hubert Charuel (Bloody Milk / Petit paysan), Léa Mysius (Ava) and David Foenkinos (Jalouse) will screen alongside the latest from established directors such as Anne Fontaine, Philippe le Guay, Cédric Klapisch, François Ozon, Claire Denis and Tonie Marshall.  Included will also be films from ‘artists’ adept on both sides of the camera including Mathieu Amalric, Albert Dupontel, Noémie Lvovsky and Valérie Lemercier.

Escorting us on this intoxicating voyage will be new ‘darlings’ of French cinema such as Swann Arlaud, Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, Finnegan Oldfield, Laetitia Dosch and Anaïs Demoustier joining acknowledged stars including Fanny Ardant, Jean-Pierre Bacri, Nathalie Baye, Gael García Bernal, Bérénice Béjo, Juliette Binoche, Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi, Vincent Cassel, François Cluzet, and Catherine Deneuve, to Gérard Depardieu, Emmanuelle Devos, Jean Dujardin, Romain Duris, Samy Frey, Nicole Garcia, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Isabelle Huppert, Agnès Jaoui, Tcheky Karyo, Mathieu Kassovitz, Mélanie Laurent, Chiara Mastroianni, Vanessa Paradis, Roschdy Zem andOmar Sy.

Highlights of the 2018 line-up also include Montparnasse Bienvenüe, the stunning feature debut from director Léonor Serraille about a young woman adrift in Paris, awarded the Camera d’Or at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival; Robin Campillo's BPM (Beats Per Minute), also a big winner at Cannes 2017, securing both the Grand Prix and FIPRESCI Prize; Double Lover (L’amant double), an erotic thriller with Marine Vacth, Jérémie Renier and Jacqueline Bisset; Ismael's Ghosts (Les fantômes d’Ismaël) starring Mathieu Amalric and Marion Cotillard as two former lovers whose paths collide, and Custody, the story of a broken marriage that leads to a bitter custody battle that won the Silver Lion at the 2017 Venice Film Festival.
