The 38th Montreal World Film Festival opens today, word from the President

The 38th Montreal World Film Festival August 21 - September 1, 2014

Since its founding 38 years ago, the Montreal World Film Festival continues to offer film lovers and professionals a rich program based on cultural diversity, innovation, independence and creativity. The success and international reputation of the Montreal World Film Festival are firmly linked to these principles and goals.

The World Film Festival is the only competitive film event in North America recognized by FIAPF, the International Federation of Film Producers’ Associations.

Influence Communication, Canada's top information broker and aggregator, which collects and aggregates 700,000 news items from around the world, analyzed fallout from the Montreal World Film Festival and concluded that it is "Quebec's standard-bearer in international media", the Quebec event that is the most widely covered around the world.

The exhibition of films in movie theatres has undergone considerable transformation in recent years. For a long time, even ahead of New York and Los Angeles, Montreal was the North American city where cinephiles could avail themselves of the broadest selection of works from around the world. These days, the programming of commercial cinemas is dominated by blockbusters. Without the Montreal World Film Festival and its annual selection of some 400 films from 80 countries, the Montreal film landscape would be drastically reduced.

In addition to its program of screenings, the Festival presents a wide series of film-related activities. We invite you to consult our web site regularly for details.

Bon festival!

GET A JOB the comedy made in Hawaii and directed by Maui’s Brian Kohne took top honors for a full feature film while THE DOORMAN filmed in New York by director Serena Dykman took top accolades for a short.  This was at the eighth annual Trinity International Film Festival held at the Carr Art Center.

Last year’s full feature winner was NAA BANGARU THALLI, directed by Rajesh Touchriver.  It was the Telugu version of the Malayalam film ENTE which was about sex trafficking in India.  The film went on to great critical acclaim.

“The mission statement of the film festival is to provide a multicultural festival experience,” said festival co-director Gregory Taylor.   He continued, “With the showing of all these culturally diverse independent films, I know we hit the mark.  If people are entertained we did our job.”

Full crowds watched on two screens at the T.I.F.F. as over 40 films from 14 countries were juried and showcased.  Over 100 entries were received.  Director Walter V. Marshall of Michigan got a special award as Best New Artist for the full feature, A LOVE THAT HURTS.     https://www.facebook.com/Alovethathurts

Raymond Rolak, one of the producers from GET A JOB was on hand to receive their award.  The filmmaker said, “The people of Hawaii were the real stars of the film.  Also, Brian Kohne weaved the musical talents of Willie K and Eric Gilliom along with the other world class island entertainers masterfully.  The film and music video were giant grand slam homeruns.  The jokes, pratfalls and island humor in the screenplay are all added value to leaving viewers thoroughly entertained.”   Kohne, along with producer Stefan Schafer and cinematographer Dan Hersey are in pre-production for the Hawaiian thriller KULEANA.   www.getajobmovie.com

French born Serena Dykman said at the afterglow, “I am totally thrilled for my cast and crew.  This award really validates all the hard work that went into the project.  Manhattan was the star of our project.  As a writer I see so many more stories coming from New York City.  This award documents a team effort.”  Dykman who was raised in Brussels is in post-production on another New York short, BED BUGS & CO.

 http://www.serenadykman.com/#!the-doorman/c1747

Rolak added, “The afterglow at the “Coaches Corner” across the street from the Carr Arts Center was a nice touch.  We all are grateful for the warm and generous Detroit hospitality from Heather Raye and her staff.  There was a lot of cinema networking going on, from both sides of the camera.  The Trinity International Film Festival exceeded beyond all expectations.”

Winners of this year’s best feature and short film categories received a professional prize pack from Sony that included more than $3,500 worth of Sony Vegas editing software and sound effects.

Marshalle Montgomery, festival co-director added, “We tried to expose a wide variety of feature and short films for people to enjoy, everything from action, drama, animation and comedy — we definitely have movies that captured attention.”

Nate Hapke, now of Los Angeles and recently graduated from Syracuse University got the special Emerging Talent Award for the short ALVIE.

I AM SAMI by Kae Bahar of the United Kingdom, LET BE by Matt Boatright-Simon (USA, Wisconsicn) and featuring actress Val Vega, along with  TRAPPED: THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE by Carlonese Powell (USA, Detroit) were all 15 minute shorts judged as exceptional and got Festival Choice Awards.

A unique offering of youth oriented shorts was screened on Saturday.  Overall, the $10 admission ticket allowed for two days of all-access viewing.  The festival also had a category to showcase the work of local filmmakers.  Detroit filmmakers with presentations included directors, Ashley Kay Evans, Mida Chu, Anthony Green, Darren Brown, Walter V. Marshall, Carlonese Powell, Gregory Dockery and producer, Raymond Rolak

What is Behind the Cellar Door...

Cellar Door Film Festival (CDFF) aims to be Ottawa's first showcase of speculative cinema while celebrating the creativity of the Ottawa film scene and spotlighting the city as a setting for the sinister and supernatural.

What We Need & What You Get

Festivals like this rely on the generosity of people like you.

We need this $2000 to ensure that we can comfortably run the first season of CDFF. So where will your hard-earned dollars be going, exactly?

  • To book the appropriate venue, technician(s), and equipment needed to make the Festival a reality
  • For advertising, printing, and other promotional costs
  • To provide recognition and compensation for our chosen filmmakers
And now for the important stuff: what YOU get! In addition to all the lovely perks described on the side of the screen, you also get to know that you supported independent filmmakers in the Ottawa-area and abroad. And that's priceless, really!

The Impact.

So why support us? Why should you care?

Because with your support, we in turn are supporting independent filmmakers. CDFF is a venue for both local and international filmmakers to step up and present their stories.

The Arts strengthen the economy. They support the community and local merchants. They drive tourism, have a social impact and promote the city. They spark creativity and innovation while giving a voice to those we may not otherwise hear.

We have a lot more information. Check out our:
The CDFF team is comprised of passionate people who care about arts and culture, and have a varied background of previous success. We want to showcase talent and to promote the Ottawa arts scene.

Other Ways You Can Help

We are always looking for volunteers, partnership opportunities, and ideas! If you would like to send us a message or if you have a question, please do not hesitate: info.cdff@gmail.com

The sixth edition of the Montreal Stop Motion Film Festival is proud to announce the release of its official program for 2014. This year, the Festival will be taking place on September 26th, 27th, and 28th in the J.A. de Sève Theater at Concordia University (1453 Mackay Street, Montreal).

The Montreal Stop Motion Film Festival, the first of its kind, has been promoting stop motion since 2009. Last year, we had a stellar presentation as we celebrated the 20th anniversary of the release of The Nightmare Before Christmas with our first full house presentation.

This year’s edition is proud to announce the coming of two professionals from the field of Stop Motion animation who will take us behind-the-scenes of the television series Robot Chicken and the upcoming feature film from LAIKA studio, The Boxtrolls.

Alex Kamer, animation director on Robot Chicken, will join us on Friday, September 26th to start the festival off right. Alex will talk about some of the highlights of his career in stop motion before moving onto a behind-the-scenes look at the production of Robot Chicken. Some of the show’s most beloved characters will also be on display during the talk.

The release of LAIKA’s stop motion production The Boxtrolls coincides with the sixth edition of this year’s festival. Mrs. Georgina Hayns, creative supervisor of the famous puppet fabrication department at LAIKA, will join us on September 27 to give a talk about the making of the handcrafted stop motion feature film. With a behind-the-scenes tour, she will describe the major undertaking involved in the making of this remarkable animated film.

As a special treat, production puppets will also be on display.

The Montreal Stop Motion Animation Film Festival is one of the few that can offer an up close and personal look at the different handcrafted puppets from major stop motion productions.

In addition to the 60 films in official competition, talks, and guest artists, the festival is also offering two free family screenings, presented by Mega Bloks, and six hands-on pods with animation software so that young animators can discover the magic of animation on site.

The Montreal Stop Motion Film Festival promises to be like no other festival in town!

A talk with Alex Kamer, Animation Director on Robot Chicken Friday, September 26:  7:00 p.m.

Robot Chicken is the brainchild of Seth Green and Mathew Senreich. Based on popular super-heroes and various characters from childhood, they parody the pop culture conventions with fast paced sketches to create hilarious comedic situations using stop motion animation.

Alex Kamer has been working for several years on the series and now serves as Animation Director on its 7th season! Alex will talk about some of the highlights of his career in stop motion, beginning with how he got into it right up to his work on Robot Chicken.  He will also share his insights and a behind-the-scenes look at the production work and how they adapt to work in a fast paced environment. Some of the beloved character of the show will also be on display.

She has been involved in all aspects of puppet fabrication for stop motion films for over twenty years. The Short Short Story Film Festival is a competitive international festival of films that tell a story in under six minutes.

The festival returns with its 8th edition in late November 2014, in select locations in southern New England.

The Short Short Story Film Festival celebrates brevity in filmmaking, featuring films from across the globe, lovingly harvested by the folks here at MergingArts Productions.

From mini-documentaries to sentimental melodramas to black comedies to animated thrillers, the festival features succinct presentations of all kinds of short film stories.

The festival consists of two distinct programs of short films.

The first, the Heartstrings Program, includes stories of a emotional nature - from bittersweet romances to inspiring documentaries to tales of love and loss.

The second program, the Headtrip Program, presents forays into the bizarre - visits to strange worlds, offbeat satires, and unhinged animations.

You can read more about the history of the festival and the submission process (including where to send us your file digitally) at: http://www.mergingartsproductions.com/Film/SSS/Submissions.aspx

You will need to fill out a submission form here:

Note, there is no fee for submission to our film festival(s).

With £6000 in cash prizes and seven categories in its Short Film City programme, the 28th Leeds International Film Festival offers fantastic opportunities to short film makers who submit their films to the festival. Entries that are selected at LIFF28 qualify for both the Academy Awards® and BAFTAs.

We are now considering films for both the Louis Le Prince International Short Film Competition and the World Animation Award. The winning film in each competition will receive a cash prize of £2000, and LIFF28 is also accepting submissions for the BAFTA-qualifying British Short Film Competition, which has a winning prize of £1000.

Leeds International Film Festival champions local filmmaking and is proud to announce a £500 cash prize for the annual Yorkshire Short Film Competition. To be eligible, the production of the film must have been wholly located within Yorkshire. We adore regional flavour, but the film can be any style or genre possible.

In 2014, LIFF28 launches its brand new Leeds International Screendance competition to support outstanding collaborations in film and dance art forms. The winning film will be awarded a cash prize of £500.

Submissions are also open for the Fanomenon Silver Melies Fantasy Short Film Award. The winner of the competition goes forward to compete for the coveted Méliès d’Or prize at Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival in October. LIFF28 has also opened submissions for Dead Short - A new competition for horror shorts. Entries are welcome from anywhere in the world but must be 10 minutes or less and have a strong horror theme.

LIFF28 supports new innovative filmmaking from a broad, international diversity of sources. LIFF28 prioritises the screening of outstanding work that has not yet received the attention it deserves and there is no premiere policy for selection.

The next deadline is August 29th. The Extended deadline for Withoutabox members is 19thSeptember.

For more information on how to submit go to http://www.leedsfilm.com/submissions-2014/

Stars and the best from East and Central European cinema will be shown at the 24th edition of FilmFestival Cottbus November 4-9, 2014. The walk along the blue carpet is always worth it. Beside the three competitions, another highlight of the programme constitutes the >Focus< section, which continues the cinematographic exploration of Eastern European diversity. Under the title  „queerEAST” a selection of films on homosexuality in Eastern Europe will be screened. In the light of current events the section >Specials< will offer a selection of films from the Ukraine. >globalEAST< traces the diverse influences of Eastern Europe in global contemporary cinema. This year we will stop by in Italy. The new section >Domownja | Heimat< provides a new home for our regional focus. Here you can find a selection of Sorbian-Wendish and regional film productions.

“When we finish putting together the program there is a moment of absolute joy,” said Telluride Film Festival executive director Julie Huntsinger. “We never know what the film world will bring us when we set out each year, but with incredible gratitude to the filmmakers and artists and satisfaction in knowing we have screened everything imaginable, we are once again thrilled to present the absolute best in new American and world cinema and treasured films from the past. We hope our audience will be as inspired as we are. “

Telluride Film Festival annually celebrates heroes of cinema who preserve, honor and present great movies. The 2014 Special Medallion award goes to Cineteca di Bologna and Gian Luca Farinelli for the significant role played in film restoration and preservation of film culture. JOYFUL LAUGHTER, Mario Monicelli’s masterpiece from 1960 is a recent example of Bologna’s restorative work and will screen as part of the program.

Telluride Film Festival’s SHOWcase for Shorts features fourteen short films chosen to precede select feature films; Filmmakers of Tomorrow includes three programs: Student Prints, Great Expectations, and Calling Cards from eighteen emerging filmmakers.

Telluride Film Festival’s Education Programs present students the opportunity to experience film as an art and expand participants’ worldview through film screenings and filmmaker discussions. The Student Symposium provides 54 graduate and undergraduate college students a weekend-long immersion in cinema. The City Lights Project, now in its 15th year, brings 21 high school students and seven teachers from four divergent schools the opportunity to participate in a concentrated program of screenings and discussions. FilmLAB offers a master-class program for UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television graduate filmmaking students. The Roger Ebert/TFF University Seminars give university professors and students the opportunity to travel to the Festival each year to participate in special programming and to attend screenings throughout the weekend.

Telluride Film Festival’s Talking Heads programs allow attendees to go behind the scenes with the Festival’s special guests. Six Conversations take place between Festival guests and the audience about cinema and culture, and three outdoor Noon Seminars feature a panel of Festival guests discussing a wide range of film topics. These programs are free and open to the public.

Various Festivities will take place throughout the Festival including Book Signings with Cheryl Strayed (Wild), Maziar Bahari (Then They Came for Me), Sayed Kashua (Dancing Arabs), Werner Herzog (A Guide for the Perplexed), and Ted Hope (Hope for Film); Quincy Jones presents: Justin Kauflin in Concert, music from KEEP ON KEEPIN’ ON; and Behind the Scenes: Feast and Lava where makers of Disney’s FEAST and Pixar’s LAVA share their inspiration behind and creation of two memorable animation films.

Corporate support at Telluride Film Festival plays an essential role in the life of the Festival and underscores the Festival’s commitment to quality, adventure and distinction in the art of cinema. TFF is privileged to collaborate with some of the world’s most renowned consumer and entertainment brands, including Turner Classic Movies, EY, Audible.com, Film Finances, Inc., Meyer Sound, Bombardier Business Aircraft,  The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group and Universal Studios; and excited to welcome new partners Blu Homes, Peter G. Dodge Foundation, Vimeo, Speck-- each of which are aligned with a unique feature of the festival. Equally, Telluride Film Festival is extremely proud of its committed relationships with UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, Americas Film Conservancy, London Hotels: NYC & West Hollywood, Dolby, Teatulia, Telluride Alpine Lodging, New Sheridan Hotel, The Hollywood Reporter, Cinedigm, Boston Light and Sound, Land Rover North America, Canon, Dell, Novo Coffee and Time Warner Cable Business Class.

Huntsinger comments, “We simply could not present Telluride Film Festival without the generous support of our sponsors, who believe in what we do and back us meaningfully and repeatedly. “

The 41st Telluride Film Festival’s program will be posted in its entirety on Thursday, August 28, 2014. Visit www.telluridefilmfestival.org to download the Program Guide.
