We are thrilled to unveil the official artwork for the 23rd annual Atlanta Jewish Film Festival, returning to theaters February 8-21. The vibrant design was conceived by Atlanta illustrator Sarah Neuburger, who was inspired by the work of Ukrainian-born, Jewish artist Sonia Delauney-Terk, the first-ever woman to have a retrospective at the Louvre Museum during her lifetime.

About the Design

The piece depicts AJFF's diverse audience gathered in the spirit of curiosity, conversation, and culture. The central white dot is reminiscent of the bright light of the projected film, while the undulating 'waves' are nod to the film reel itself, showcasing the transformative power of film.

AJFF is proud to partner with Atlanta artist, Sarah Neuburger, in crafting the 23rd annual festival's campaign artwork. Drawing inspiration from Ukrainian-born Jewish artist, Sonia Delauney-Terk, the 2023 campaign showcases Neuberger’s bold style with bright, eye-catching colors and textures. The first living female to have a retrospective at the Louvre, Delauney-Terk's work spoke to Neuburger, serving as the basis for a piece that showcases the power of community.

The piece incorporates various shapes, patterns and textures to portray AJFF’s audience, comfortably seated in a theatrical environment, each experiencing the best in international and independent cinema. The piece is a strong testament of the festival’s ethos: engaging diverse audiences through curiosity, conversation, and culture.

"AJFF is situated within the arts scene of Atlanta and I wanted to represent the city, my family, and our community in the piece,” says Neuberger. “I am in an interracial relationship, our extended family is multiracial, and our chosen family is equally as diverse. I know that serving a diverse community is important to AJFF, too, so naturally that was reflected in the chosen audience members in the piece.

“Sonia Delanuey-Terk’s work was in my mind for this project because I’m a minimalist at heart and her work does that. I was initially influenced by her visuals, though the more I was looking at her work and reading more about her philosophy, it just seemed like a natural fit for AJFF,” says Neuberger.

In addition to the bold colors and elements throughout the graphic, there are also discrete details that represent film. The background resembles a quilt, a nod to the cyclical nature of life and the piecing together of parts of a whole, much like the filmmaking process. The central white dot is reminiscent of the bright light of the projected film, while the undulating "waves" are a nod to the film reel itself, showcasing the transformative power of film.

The Atlanta-based artist is also a freelance illustrator, muralist and designer who has worked with organizations large and small throughout the Peach State. Born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina, she resides in Atlanta with her wife and dogs.

Sarah Neuburger has worked on influential murals all over Atlanta, including Chastain Park, Virginia-Highlands, Brickworks Atlanta, and more. AJFF was introduced to Neuberger through her work with Living Walls, a local organization focused on creating inclusive, intentional, and thought-provoking public art to inspire social change.
