Without doubt, this 2020 Festival is set to be very different from the one we imagined in the spring and again throughout the summer. The return of the recently ordered lockdown has brought to a stop the efforts mobilised during recent weeks to offer films, some of which have been deprived of cinema screens for many months, an opportunity to be seen. Not wishing to give up, we will take any opportunity to give back to the films of the international competition the cinemas they merit as soon as possible, and thus return the confidence of those who entrusted them with us . While we wait for the moment when the films and their audiences come together again, despite everything, the juries will award the prizes of this 42nd Festival des 3 Continents and we thank them for holding steady with us and giving support to the eight selected films through the attention that they will extend to them.
We have tried at all costs to maintain the link with our different audiences and to offer, more widely, a possibility to discover or see once again films which make up the recent history of the 3 Continents. Although cinemas remain, in our eyes, the essential place for the visibilty of the fims, the exceptional context that we are going through encourages us to experiment. Also, it is from their own homes that, this year, spectateurs will be able to accompany us and watch the sessions that we are offering them.
We cannot hide the level of our concerns, they are certainly hitting the whole of the cinema branch but also the whole of culture and the arts. If proof of our ability to resist both individually and collectively has been shown many times, we also want this festival to express thoughts of solidarity for all the professionals of the cinema and the performing arts, for the numerous cancelled festivals, for the films and their authors who in this crisis year are experiencing such uncertain times.

In an unprecedented situation of cultural paralysis, the Festival des 3 Continents has imagined, in place of its original project, a new format for its 42nd edition. The International Competition has been maintained and the selected films will be submitted to the professional Jury and the Youth Jury who will award the Montgolfière d’or and the Montgolfière d’argent and the prize of the Youth Jury, respectively. Films from the Official Selection that have given their approval will be accessible to accredited professionals and press at Festival Scope Pro. We hope to be able to present these films to the public as soon as cinemas reopen. However, we did not want to forget the large and loyal public of the Festival. Thus a different film will be offered every evening of the week and two films on the weekend between November 20 and 29 : virtual and free sessions, subject to availability. In this way, fourteen sessions (Free VOD) will be offered to the public in mainland France.
. INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
The Festival des 3 Continents has maintained the International Competition this year with 8 films not yet screened in France, Europe or elsewhere in the world.
On the programme, 5 fiction and 3 documentary films will be submitted to the appreciation of a jury of professionals (responsible for awarding the Montgolfière d'or et Montgolfière d'argent prizes) and that of the Youth Jury (Young Jury Award).
These prizes will be unveiled on Monday, November 30 at 14 p.m. (Paris time) on the festival's website and social networks.
As soon as the situation allows, the films of the competition will be shown in the Nantes cinemas. Following these showings and audience votes, the RFI-Wik Prize of the Public will be awarded.
The films of the International Competition, which have given their consent, will be accessible to professionals and the press in the video library of the Festival on Festival Scope Pro (https://pro.festivalscope.com/festival/show/festival-des-3-continents/2020) from November 20 to December 6, 2020.

. SPECIAL SESSIONS
The Festival des 3 Continents will offer professionals the opportunity to discover a selection of films shown in Special Screenings, as a complement to the films of the International Competition. In addition to films not screened in France, the festival will also welcome several films from the Cannes Classics 2020 Selection. By giving visibility to works whose discovery has been impeded by the context of the pandemic, the festival team wishes to show their attachment to the authors and also their support to producers and distributors.

. THE HOME AND THE WORLD: A WELCOME ESCAPE WITH THE 3 CONTINENTS
The Festival des 3 Continents continues to keep in mind the cinema-loving and curious public who have given their support since 1979. For this first edition which they are unable to attend, the Festival team is offering a freely accessible (subject to availability) selection of films, which have left their mark on the history of the festival over the last ten years. Also, two films from the Special Screenings of the Official Selection 2020 are proposed.

Assurément, ce festival 2020 aurait été bien différent de celui que nous imaginions au printemps et encore au fil de l’été. Le reconfinement récemment ordonné met un coup d’arrêt aux efforts mobilisés ces dernières semaines pour offrir à des films, pour certains privés d’écran de cinéma depuis de longs mois, une opportunité d’être vus. Ne voulant pas baisser les bras, nous nous approprierons toutes les opportunités pour redonner au plus vite aux films de la Compétition internationale les salles de cinéma qu’ils méritent et ainsi de rendre à ceux qui nous les ont confiés leur confiance. En attendant ce moment de la rencontre entre les films et le public, les jurys décerneront malgré tout les prix de ce 42ème Festival des 3 Continents et nous les remercions de tenir bon avec nous et de soutenir à travers l’attention qu’ils leur porteront les huit films sélectionnés.
Nous voulions coûte que coûte maintenir le lien avec nos publics et offrir plus largement encore une possibilité de découvrir ou de revoir des films qui ont fait l’histoire récente des 3 Continents. Si la salle de cinéma demeure à nos yeux le lieu essentiel de la visibilité des œuvres, le contexte exceptionnel que nous traversons nous invite à expérimenter. Aussi, c’est depuis chez eux que les spectateurs pourront cette année nous accompagner et suivre ces séances que nous leur offrons.
Nous ne cachons pas l’état de nos inquiétudes, elles frappent certes toute la filière cinéma mais le monde de la culture et des arts tout entier. Si la preuve de notre capacité de résilience tant individuelle que collective a maintes fois été faite, ce festival veut aussi être l’expression d’une pensée solidaire pour tous les professionnels du cinéma et du spectacle vivant, pour les nombreux festivals annulés, pour les films et leurs auteurs qui en cette année de crise vivent des temps si incertains.

Dans une situation de paralysie culturelle sans précédent, le Festival des 3 Continents imagine, en lieu et place de son projet initial, une nouvelle proposition pour la 42èmeédition. La Compétition internationale est maintenue et les films sélectionnés seront soumis au Jury professionnel et au Jury Jeune qui attribueront respectivement les Montgolfière d’or et d’argent et le Prix du Jury Jeune. Les films de la Sélection officielle ayant donnés leur accord seront accessibles aux professionnels accrédités sur Festival Scope Pro. Nous espérons pouvoir présenter ces films au public dès la réouverture des salles de cinéma. Mais nous n’avons pas voulu oublier le public fidèle et nombreux du festival. Ainsi un film différent sera proposé chaque soir de la semaine et deux sur les journées des week-ends du 20 au 29 novembre 2020 lors de séances virtuelles et gratuites dans la limite des places disponibles. Quatorze séances (Free VOD) seront ainsi offertes au public en France métropole.
. COMPÉTITION INTERNATIONALE
Le Festival des 3 Continents maintient la Compétition internationale cette année avec 8 films en première française, européenne ou mondiale.
Au programme, 5 fictions et 3 documentaires seront soumis à l'appréciation d'un jury de professionnels (chargé de décerner les prix Montgolfière d'or et Montgolfière d'argent) et du Jury Jeune (Prix du Jury Jeune).
Le Palmarès 2020 sera dévoilé lundi 30 novembre à 14h00 sur le site et les réseaux sociaux du festival.
Dès que la situation le permettra, les films de la compétition feront l’objet d’une présentation dans les salles nantaises. A l’issue de ces projections et du vote des spectateurs, sera remis le Prix du public (Prix RFI-Wik du Public).

Le Festival des 3 Continents à Nantes garde à cœur le public cinéphile et curieux qui le fait vivre depuis 1979. Pour cette première édition empêchée, l’équipe du festival invite les spectateurs français à des séances en ligne gratuites dans la limite des places disponibles. Une sélection de films qui ont marqué l’histoire du festival ces dix dernières années. Également deux films des Séances spéciales de la Sélection officielle 2020 sont proposés.
